The lungs are two inflated balloon like structures located inside the chest on either side of the heart which are responsible for the extraction of oxygen from the inhaled air and elimination of Carbon dioxide through the exhaled air from the body. The right lung is slightly bigger and heavier than the left lung.

Together the lungs contain approximately 350-500 million air sacs which are in close proximity to the small branches of the pulmonary arteries separated from them by the alveolo-capillary membrane across which gas exchange takes place. The airways are the tubes that bring inhaled air into the alveoli.

The airways commence with the Glottis and Trachea which then divides into the right and left main bronchi. The right main bronchus is connected to the right lung and the left main bronchus is connected to the left lung. Bronchi then divide into bronchioles, whic further subdivide into alveolar ducts, which further subdivide to supply alveolar sacs. The length of all these airways, (from the largest to the smallest), has been estimated to be approximately 2440 kilometres. Each lung is enveloped in a pleural sac.

Common symptoms of lung disease:

Cough:
A cough that persists for more than a few days could point to an underlying lung disease especially if it accompanied by fever, a lot of phlegm or blood. Cough may be dry (without any phlegm), or wet (with a lot of phlegm). Hemoptysis (coughing up blood) is a particularly serious symptom that must be looked into without delay.

Phlegm (expectoration):
Is usually a pointer towards an ongoing lung infection.

Difficulty in breathing:
Normal breathing is typically effortless and silent. When however, the intake of oxygen and elimination of carbon di oxide are inadequate, the lungs compensate by increasing both the rate of breathing and the volume of air inhaled and exhaled. This uncomfortable awareness of breathing is known in medical parlance as “dyspnoea”.

Noisy breathing (wheeze):
Is usually due to a spasm of the smaller airways (bronchioles) as typically occurs in Asthma. Normal breathing is silent. A wheeze can be heard.

Chest pain which is worse on deep breathing:
Is usually due to the diseased lung coming into contact (friction) with the chest wall as typically occurs in a pneumonia.

Further Tests:

After listening to your history and doing a physical examination, your doctor may order one or more of the following blood investigations to arrive at a diagnosis. Hemoglobin, Arterial Blood Gas Analysis, D-DIimer assay, sputum culture etc. He may also request for a Spirometry, XRay, CT Scan, MRI scan, V/Q (Ventilation / Perfusion) scan, Bronchoscopy etc depending on what his clinical suspicion is.
